Late Licence Disc Fee Calculator
Expired licence disc, or buying a car whose disc ran out months ago? Pick the province, enter the expiry date and the tare weight, and see an estimate of what it costs to make it legal again.
Works out licence fee, arrears and late penalties only. The RTMC transaction fee is shown separately under the total; the registration fee, roadworthy and any other counter or admin fees are not included. Your licensing office has the final figure.
How this estimate is worked out
Grace period. You have 21 days after the disc expires to renew without a late penalty (National Road Traffic Regulations, reg 60).
Arrears. One-twelfth of the annual licence fee for each month from the first day of the month after the disc expires until the last day of the month before the month you renew in (reg 59).
Late penalty. One-tenth of the fee for every month or part of a month it stays unpaid, never more than the total fee (reg 57). A part month counts as a full month. When a disc has been expired for more than a year, the penalty is worked out year by year: the cap restarts for each lapsed year, and each year is charged at the tariff in force when that year began. That per-year reading comes from licensing-office practice; reg 57 itself doesn’t spell it out.
New disc. The total also includes a full annual fee for the new disc, at the tariff in force on the day you renew.
Where the fees come from. Each result names the tariff it used. Where a province’s fees have been checked against its gazette you’ll see the gazette; otherwise the result is marked Provisional and cites the published tables it was taken from. Where we don’t hold a verified tariff for a year, the calculator asks you for the fee rather than guessing.
